Bad Chainring?

If shifting between the small and middle rings on the setup you have
now is working okay even with the new ring being 1mm further out, you
could just space your big ring out that same amount. Chainline would be
a little bit different from where you started.

Is it fitted the wrong way round?

Nope, just a thinner ring. Add some 1mm spacers.
