Hi, I've got an older Phil BB that developed a problem last week. Basically the axle appears to be slipping so that the cranks move independently of each other. I was riding and a crank slipped so that the cranks are pointed in close to the same direction rather than being opposed. After I stopped, I was able to move the crank arms independently of each other but they don't seem to be going out of line as I would expect if the axle had snapped. It seems like the axle is made in two pieces and they are slipping on each other but I have no idea what the BB looks like internally.
Two questions: 1) I've emailed Phil to see whether this is repairable and the answer was that they could do a bearing replacement that would take care of it. I've emailed them back to confirm this would take care of the problem but I'm afraid they may have misunderstood the problem. 2) Has anyone seen anything like this happen with a Phil BB before. I'm somewhat of a Clydesdale and was gently pedaling out of the saddle when it happened. I feel very fortunate that I wasn't pushing hard or I might have gone down. And I was a half block from the house.
I just heard back from them and they are doing a warranty replacement on the axle and just charging for the bearings so I'll essentially have a new BB. Stand up customer service on an older part.
