Hello, I want a road bike, but have been having some lower back pain. Is road cycling usually a good
relief for back pain or an aggravator?
Thanks, Chas

This is discussed a lot. Usually because your bike doesn't fit (like mine), or your position is
wrong. Go to your LBS and let them take a look, or search google for more info.

Sorta depends on what's causing your back pain. Mine is osteoarthritis-related -- bone spurs in the
spine -- and riding my road bikes is the best therapy I've found.
My non-expert opinion is that if you get back pain from sitting too long in a chair, sitting upright
on a bike will probably not help you.

In my experience, any exercise which stretches your back and leg muscles is good for your back in
the long run, and this includes biking. You might experience a little more soreness than usual at
first, but that will likely go away relatively quickly as you get in better shape. That is unless
you have something truly wrong with your spine.

I've had chronic back pain most all my life... and find bike riding a great benefit... (relief).
