  1. I can't find much on the benefits of back arching as a back
    strenthening exercise.

While lying on my back with knees up I arch my back upwards
as far as possible. Is this exercise good for the back
    (lower back)?

    Thanks

That exercise is better for developing back flexibility than
it is to strengthen the back.

You can also lie on your stomach and arch up using your
hands to push off the floor or arch up using your lower
back muscles while holding your hands off the floor.

The latter exercise will increase back strength as well as
flexibility. It is called a hyperextension.

If you belong to a gym, many gyms have a device allowing you
to do hyerextensions with a greater range of motion which
will develop greater strength and flexibility. And you can
add to the strength developing quality of the exercise by
adding resistance (ie holding a weight to your chest while
    arching back).

Also remember to strengthen the opposing muscles
(abdominals) by doing crunches or similar exercise.

Before attempting any of these exercises I suggest that you
consult with a qualified health professional as these
exercises can potentially cause problems especially when
    done improperly.

    Aloha,

    Rich

The best exercises I found were by the YMCA who once had a
healthy back class. They worked when nothing elde did. They
may still offer it and be able to get you copies. The one
you mention helps to strenghtened the back muscles and
stretch them to be flexible, you also must return the
position into a sagging back position.

    Good luck,

    Jan
