DW is considering changing part of the school run from walk/scooter to bike/seat/trailer. This involves putting the small baby in the trailer. I have aquired a second hand stage 0 car seat for this purpose. The subject of cutting down such a seat to save space and weight has come up in this NG before and I wondered if anyone could share any practical experience of doing this. I would quite like to retain the carry handle. Is there much weight to be saved? Did cutting down the seat work for anyone else (or not work)? I am looking for practical experience if possible.

We found an old ABS shell one. It was cut up for two reasons:
1. so we could drill it and bolt it to the base of the trailer (a solid plastic base in this case) and 2. so it would fit next to child #1.
If you are wanting to use it as a carry seat (we weren't) then not cutting it is a good idea and just strapping it in (kiddy trailer with isofix points?) would be needed.
Keep it well reclined and it should be no problem.

I used a regular car kiddy seat unmodified in my trek trailer when my kids were babies. The standard straps in the trailer held the seat in the place well enough in my estimation. The weight of the seat was not really an issue for me. Does the seat need to be cut down at all? Will it fit in the trailer without cutting it.

probably not. I had half remembered some comments (probably David's) but it seems that my requirements are closer to yours so I can probably use the car seat we already had for use in the car
