  1. What should the average rider's goals be for this?

Also, what kind of average speed are you looking for when you're still a novice? I have been trying to peg 15mph.

  2. you should read a few books on cycling training (Cyclist Training Bible, by Joe Friel; The Ultimate Ride, by Chris Carmichael) and use the tests they have created to determine your HR & wattage zones.

also, the moderator of this forum (rick stern) also has an excellent cycling training site. the key is learning where your fitness level is today via a few simple tests, then designing a training program that helps you develop your fitness level.

retesting every few months helps you monitor your progress and adjust your training regimen to match your progress.
