  1. For someone to lose weight on the Atkins diet, does that person have to
stay on it for a few weeks (at the prescribed 20 g carb daily intake
ceiling) or can someone lose weight by interrupting this period? If it
is possible to interrupt this period, how often could it be broken
before weight loss would no longer occur?

What if someone goes "low-carb" just for a meal or a day? Could this
    have any weight loss effect?

Forget about low carb, low-fat, or whatever... and even forget about
losing weight. Instead focus on eating healthier and getting enough
exercise. If you do this, you'll not only lose weight but you'll also
feel a heck of a lot better.

Okay, but how do you eat "healthier", you ask?

Eat lots of produce - fruits and vegtables in their natural state. Not
smoothered in fatty dressings or deep fried, but good ol' plain fresh
    fruits and veggies.

Reject breads and cereals made from "enriched" wheat flour. If the
first ingredient doesn't say "whole grain" or "whole wheat", don't buy
    it.

Reject hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. If their in the
    ingredient list don't buy it.

Be careful about what you drink. Stop drinking soda, fruit _punch_,
and excessive amounts of alcohol. Instead drink dairy, tea, water and
    _some_ fruit _juice_.

Don't eat processed meats - lunch meat, sausage, hot dogs, ect. Eat
lean cuts of turkey, chicken, fish, pork and beef that are about the
size of the back of your hand.

Exercise: If your hobby is watching TV, get a new hobby. Find a hobby
that keeps you moving. Find ways to walk _a lot_ and take the stairs
    instead of the elevator.

Follow these and you'll be on your way to better health. Good luck.

The whole idea behind Atkins is to go into Ketosis. The only way to do that
is to cut w-a-a-a-y back on the carbs and stay that way. Doesn't work to do
just one day or just one meal. And even if you do stick with it for a time
and lose weight, if you resume your old eating habits, you'll gain back the
    weight.
