In most aspects, the Atkins diet seems appropriate for diabetics. However, it was designed mainly
for losing weight. For diabetics with normal weight, would the Atkins diet cause excessive weight
loss? Especially for diabetics with hypertension (high blood pressure), that are normal or
underweight maintaining body weight becomes a problem. What is an appropriate diet that will prevent
weight loss for those who must limit sugar, carbs, and fats?

C. C. ChangIf you read Atkins books he warns clearly do NOT use his diet if you have any health problems other
being overweight unless you have consulted your personal physician first. So, do NOT put yourself on
Atkins unless your doc has clearly stated yes.Al.

being overweight unless you have consulted your personal physician first. So, do NOT put yourself
on Atkins unless your doc has clearly stated yes.In addition, if you read the book, study the section about the "maintenance phase" for people who
don't need to lose any more weight.Atkins isn't great on limiting fat, by the way, so if you have to limit fat, Atkins isn't for you.
Limiting fat is becoming more controversial as time goes on, though, as many people now believe that
it depends on the type of fat you are eating, and also upon whether your body is preferentially
burning fat or carbohydrates for its energy. If you are a fat-burner, limiting fat could cause you
problems, i.e., switch you into carb-burning mode instead, where perhaps you may be more inclined to
gain weight, depending as usual on what and how much you eat and so on. But... perhaps that is the
right thing for you.
