What is better is subjective. That's why they make different models. Sometimes our greatest learning comes from mistakes made. Try and educate yourself as much as possible by reading and riding bikes similar to what you think you want. If the bike is a good fit to you there is not necessarily a right or wrong , just different. I would however stay away from a unicycle for commutiing purposes.
The bike you picked is fine for a commuter. You have the option of mounting a rack on it which will become important if you are planning on commuting. If you were OK riding the bike during the test ride I would say go with it. Contrary to what some folks say IMO a road bike is more comfortable than a hybrid. A large percentage of road bike riders started out on hybrids myself included. Although this bike is for you so you would be best served by following the advice given by Paramount. Take the Hybrid out for a test ride then make your decision.
