Whats the point of even calling an eBike safe if it doesnt meet rigorous safety certifications and standards? I mean, are we just slapping a participation trophy on these things and calling it a day? Newsflash: a flashy design and a safe label from some no-name manufacturer doesnt cut it.
When Im out on the road, battling against torrential rain and howling winds, I want to know my eBike has been put through the wringer - and not just by some marketing team trying to make a quick buck. So, what specific safety certifications or standards should I be looking for? UL, CE, or ISO? Are there any that are more stringent than others? And dont even get me started on the whole self-certification nonsense. If its not third-party tested and verified, is it even worth considering?
And another thing, whats with the lack of transparency from manufacturers? Why cant they just clearly display what safety standards their eBikes meet? Are they hiding something? Its like theyre banking on our ignorance and willingness to take their word for it.
Im not asking for much. Just a little accountability and honesty would be nice. So, lets get real here. What safety certifications and standards should we be demanding from eBike manufacturers? And whats the bare minimum we should be accepting?
