I found this frameset, as the guy was tossing it to the trash. He claims it is an araya frame. I did some google search and it seems that *araya* is more commonly associated with wheels. Did the produce frames at one point in history? It's a lugged steel frame. Any info on this? Ken

I've seen a couple Araya bicycles. ISTR they were middle-of-the-road Japanese bikes from the '70's and possibly early '80's. Nothing *truly* unusual- but it might make a good fixie or kickaround bike.
Are there any tubing stickers or decals? They might give you an indication of what grade of bike you're dealing with.

You seem to be right, it looks Japanese, but I can't be sure about the heritage of this frame, the decals look as though they were peeled off long ago. But from what I can tell by the general construction, lugged frame, weight, and thickness of headtube, bb shell, seat post tube it looks like a decent frame, but lack of drivetrain makes me think it might just be worth putting back into the trash. Maybe I will hold onto it for a bit. Ken

Even the middlin' quality bikes of that era were darn good. As long as it's not crunched, why not make it into an errand bike? A friend donated an old Raleigh frame to me- I built it as a light single-speed (700x32C tires, MA-40 rims, straight handlebars, other "just lying around" parts) and I find it's a lot of fun to ride to the store or local Starbucks. If you've got some spare parts, why not give it a go?
