You go down, lose a bunch of skin, and it's easier to clean up and
there's less chance of infection if it's shaved.

That's the old excuse for men who fear being tagged as being gay for
    their pretty legs.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/shaving.html

From that page "Many folks with hair get massages and it has no effect
on comfort. You'd think from this excuse, that those who shave get
massages regularly and that massage parlors always shave their
    customers. Neither is true."

You're saying, that because businesses trying to make money off
massages don't create a hurdle to getting customers (higher price due
to shaving, or the additional time it takes customers to shave) that
that demonstrates shaving doesn't make massages easier? That seems
    pretty flawed logic.

Here's the test -- perform a massage on hairy legs and then smooth
legs. It's clearly very doable with hair. It's also a little easier
    without.

A friend of mine was chastised by an ER doc for *not* shaving his legs,
when he got cleaned up from a particularly bad fall.
But... How often do non-racers get road rash? Yeah if you're a clod.
I haven't bothered for 15 years (since I quit racing).

    Shawn

About once every ten years, as of today. That streak on the road around
the corner wasn't dirty water after all. It was restaurant grease. Yum!

I feel so legitimate. Nearly 3000 miles on that bike, and it was its
first crash (not counting intentional ditching or tip-overs).

You post your opinions as if they were fact.

  5. That's why my close male friend in Mont shaves his. He says it's
sexier that way and he gets more waves and whistles from the ladies as
    they drive by.

    Jobst Brandt

Jobst: you should know the real answer. It's signaling behaviour.

For a roadie who races or wants to be taken seriously on serious rides,
leg-shaving is a socially questionable, functionally useless behaviour
which signals at least basic knowledge of roadie culture and a
willingness to ally yourself with roadieness.

In other words, you won't get taken seriously in a bike race if you have
unshaved legs, and that might be costly in several ways (people won't
work with you, won't trust you to be a steady pack rider, and will be
psychologically prepared to beat you because, well, you look beatable).

If this sounds like a bunch of really stupid motivations, remember that
bike racers routinely describe favourite race experiences with casual
references to "suffering" as a natural and even desired part of the
    event.

Remember: all bike racers are mental.

    Human technician.

  11. I thought they were maybe drag queens by night, road racers by day.
I don't depilitate anymore, but I used to shave or buzz. I waxed once
but that was more painful than listening to Rumsfeld.
BTW, did y'all get the wierd "Coochie Shaving" ads in the right hand
column too? Bikers speak, Google listens.

    Human technician.

Well OK, although IMO there's too much art involved for that to be
    strictly accurate.

None since that subject was done to death in the unforgettable
"ball-shaving" thread some years back. Someone else can find it for
you, I do not want my name to come up in the NSA's search of google as
    having searched on "ball shaving."

A long, long, time ago at the weekly Lachine criterium in Montreal one
of the crits in the series (first of the season or anniversary edition)
invited all old racers to participate. A bunch of retired national team
    rider types would show up.

Some of the old guys didn't bother shaving. One guy in particular
mocked all the shaved riders during most of the crit. To top it off,
while most of the field was getting dropped he pedaled happily along
near the front singing "La Vie en Rose."
