  1. BBC TV local news report this morning was that someone had resigned as a
governor of Swavesey Village College in Cambridgeshire because of bike
safety concerns citing accident rates 200 times the national average. I
switched to Radio Cambridgeshire to hear an interview on it and lo and
behold the problem is there is a downhill cycle facility that is narrow
with lots of children cycling so they keep colliding with each other. The
complainants solution was not, as the original TV report implied, to reduce
cycling but to get pupils to leave more room when cycling. The complainer
simply sent his children off ten minutes early on their bikes to avoid the
    rush.

The only dark cloud is he wanted helmets made mandatory and the radio
presenters made the usual expressions of uninformed surprise. Email duly
    sent.
