  1. I have been out of work for 4 months with torn tendons in my foot and torn ligaments in my ankle as
a result of multiple falls and sprained ankles. I have had cortisone shots that haven't helped at
all; been placed in soft casts twice with no success and finally have had a brace made which hasn't
been the help I anticipated having. A second brace is being made for me now since the first one was
way too big - done when my foot was swollen. I can't stand on my foot for any length of time and
walking any distance makes my ankle swell terribly and is quite painful. I am seeing a podiatrist
currently and he is the one who made me the brace. On Tuesday 12/2, I am getting a second opinion
with an orthopedist who specializes in feet. The podiatrist told me that I should think twice about
having surgery because I won't be able to walk normally again due to the fusion of the bones. I
won't have flexibility in my foot anymore. The tendons/ligaments can't be repaired he said. Does
anyone have any advice or has anyone gone through this type of surgery and what are they like now?
I'm anxious to return to work and live normally again without pain. Thank you for any input.

  2. I had surgery to correct the same problem, chronic instability of my left ankle. It was exactly the
ligaments and tendons that were repaired. I can't imagine why you were told it can't be done. I'd
lose that dr in a heartbeat. Anyhow, I had the surgery in '97 and my ankle has never been better.
Ask about the Brostrom procedure, and good luck. Ellen
