  1. About ten days ago I turned my right ankle and in the process partial tore 2-3
tendons. The doctor has ordered 4-6 weeks of immobilization (with a walking
    cast).

The inability to run (or even walk) or do anything else is driving me nuts!

I have heard of a device swimmers use that allows them to only focus on upper
body -- does any one else have any experience with being into forced rest and
trying to maintain some sense of cardio?

    True.

It has been driving me nuts, too. I've been wearing an arm cast
for the last 5 weeks. (One more to go.)

One issue is that with a standard cast, you need to keep the
cast dry, and you can not even wash the foot.
If you sweat, it will smell until they remove the cast.
And, if it stays too wet for too long, the skin will rot.

The doc told me I'm not allowed to sweat -- and should just
stay inside the AC for the duration.

You might ask about a GoreTex cast liner for the next cast change.

If you live in a dry climate, the goretex liner can dry out
in a couple hours. (In my area, according to my orthopaedist,
they don't dry enough and patients have had problems with skin
    rotting.)

With gortex cast liner, according to their sales literature,
    swimming is even a possibility.
