An ad for a bicycle which may have been from a former fixie maker popped up today. If fewer people are riding fixed, why not keep the good parts and include just a few refinements?
It still had the 25.4mm double butted 4130 main triangle, but they had outfitted it with an 8 speed rear cassette and a friction downtube shifter.
It looked completely 1970s except it had a threadless headset and stem. The aluminum quill stems were the worst part of the old bikes because they were flimsy and flexible and the new style gear was in context because it was polished, clear anodized aluminum.
The freewheel rear hub was the other worst part. I am taking they used a cassette hub but am not sure.
Actually I'm probably wrong about what they're doing there because they'd probably want to get away from the look of a style that had changed before they got away from the technology.
