  1. Amaretto Bread

    (serves 12-16)

    2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp baking soda
    dash salt
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 cup sugar
    1 tsp vanilla
    4 egg whites
    3/4 cups sour milk/buttermilk
    1/2 cup amaretto
    1 cup slivered almonds

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease and lightly flour 2 medium size loaf pans.
Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the shortening with an electric mixer
    for 1 minute
Add sugar and vanilla, beat untill creamy.
Add egg whites, one at a time, beating 2 minutes after each.
Mix amaretto and milk together in a separate bowl.
Alternately add dry and wet ingredients to the egg-sugar-shortening
mixture, beating on a low speed until combined after each addition.
Stir in almonds, pour mixture into the loaf pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes, until tops are golden brown
and inserted wooden toothpick comes out clean.
