I'm never satisfied with my racing performances, even though everyone else might think they're terrific. I suppose this is an indication of personality disorder, but I also suspect that it keeps me motivated to work even harder. Just wondering - are you one of the satisfied or dissatisfied?

To this day, I regret past chances that I did not take advantage of. So, I guess unsatisfied. However, I am satisfied with my results now a days.

Cant really talk from a cycling perspective as a beginner but from a running point of view that kind of mentality is ingrained in us all. Any individual sport that you push yourself to physical extremes is all about competing with yourself.
You find yourself thinking afterwards of what excactly you could have done to improve the time.... more training, less training, harder training, longer training less fast food, less drinking, more veg, what type of energy drink.
If we didnt we wouldnt bother coming back for more pain!

I'd say I'm in both. Still a relatively new racer, but certainly not new competitor. I know when I've done my "homework." But race results don't really depend solely on how hard you train. They also depend on who shows up at the start line.
There's some genetically gifted individuals out there, and if you're one of them - there's still some that are more gifted than you.
So, I train hard and I enjoy the training.
I race hard and I enjoy the race.
It's icing on the cake if I place high.
