They can't possibly give every rider in the Alpe TT a follow car. Okay, fine, only the top 2 of the team get follow cars. Suppose everybody else gets a Mavic motorcycle. They can't possibly have 140 Mavic motos. Maybe they can have 150 gendarme motos to plow a lonely furrow through the crowds of madmen ahead of each rider, but it seems unlikely. I guess there's a small road off the other side of l'Alpe, but could the motos get back to the start in time?
Maybe the riders who go off early will have a Cutter carrying a big shark or a flag to run ahead of them and force the crowds to part.

That would be funny if ASO forgot to account for the time to get back to the start. It's not like the first time they had a mountain ITT or one that is point to point and not a circuit.

Sure they can. The cars don't have to come down the mountain the same way they went up. They can go over the top and down the back way and end up right back in Bourg d'Oisans. The road is wide enough that overtaking riders can pass with their cars.
