Greetings from beautiful Beckley, West Virginia!
We're here on a little business trip. I don't have a bike, but i took the
Xootr on the plane with me. Lots of "Share the Road" roads with big, wide,
well paved shouders. But also a lot of other roads with absolutely no
shoulder at all. I would have done them by bike (I may come back with the
bike -- the hilliness quotient is ideal) but not on the scooter, alas.
But I did have an opportunity to observe a bike commute with a great deal
of style. The stretch i saw the guy do was one with no shoulders. He was
on a mountain bike. He would start up the road, then cut off at each
driveway that paralleled the road, then move to the left (wrong way) side
if there was traffic behind him but not approaching, then move back when
there was traffic approaching but nothing behind, then when he was out of
options, hit the grass and gravel. He made very good time, quite artful,
never saw anything like it.
