Spanish federation refuses to comment on doping report
MADRID, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The Spanish Cycling Federation
(RFEC) has declined to comment on media reports that Aitor Gonzalez failed a
doping test for an unidentified substance during the Tour of Spain this
month.
Gonzalez, 30, retired from the Tour before the 18th stage
suffering from tendinitis in his knee.
"We cannot confirm or deny the reports," said RFEC secretary
general General Eugenio Bermudez. "Anything relating to doping is
communicated first of all to the rider and then to his team."
Euskaltel team manager Miguel Madariaga told the sports daily
Marca the team would not hesitate to drop Gonzalez if the reports were true.
"At this moment we don't know anything official but if the news
is confirmed Aitor will have to leave the team as stipulated in his
contract," he said.
Madariaga said the team had been unable to speak to Gonzalez
directly.
Gonzalez won the Tour of Spain in 2002 and finished first in the
recent Tour of Switzerland
