Ella: Er, the dumb question would be, where are you flying from? If from the
west coast of the US, that's a reasonable fare for what is most definitely
high season. If you watch for specials, you may find something in the
neighborhood of $900 or so, but you'll have to keep on your toes, and
subscribe to various airlines frequent flyer programs so you get email
notification of such things. Or set up Travelocity to let you know when it
finds them.

You can also get combined hotel/airfare packages that offer significant
savings as well. Sometimes it's cheaper to do a package deal that might
include a few nights lodging, and skip the lodging and just do the flight.
www.Gotoday.com is a good site for such options.

I have been checking every site that i can think and that is what i come up
with.
i want to see a few stages of the tour de france, so i will be moving around
a bit in france.

this may not apply to where you are, but i presume your closest
airport with significant international traffic would be atlanta?

at least from the left coast, i found it was cheapest to fly to
london and then take trains. it was usually $200-$300 cheaper to
fly to LHR.

if you are taking a bike, you can take bikes that can be carried
in special bike bags that will accomodate a bike and wheels with
wheels off on the eurostar (london-paris via channel tunnel) and
tgv (super high speed) trains in france. that means no fenders,
racks, or panniers.

i ended up last year flying to london, hauling fully loaded
touring bike on regular slow trains to dover, on the ferry, on
train calais-paris-limoges where i rented a car and put my bike
on a rack on the back.

the best place to watch is hill climbs, otherwise the peleton is
going too fast to see much. that was why i had the car, though i
met a number of folks who did it with trains and bikes.
