I know someone that wants to sell me a used 2005 Marin Agenta with upgraded wheels and tires. I am new to cycling and looking for a good first bike for little cost, in case cycling is not my thing. He wants to sell it for $500. I have no idea about the original cost of bike. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's impossible to answer without knowing more about the bike's condition or seeing pictures. A 2010 Argenta can be had for around $1000, so $500 for a 5 year old Argenta might be a bit high.
