Advice on buying a beginner's road bike

The most important thing is to get one that fits properly.
After that, get one with fat tires so that you can get the
cushy ride you are after. I would not suggest front shocks
since they add weight and complication where it is not
really necessary.

I would recommend going used if you can, but if you want
new, the Fuji Ace fits this bill, and the League is about
$550 with STI shifters.
