I saw a bike that would make just the perfect commuter/beater thingie for me - Mongoose Randonneur LE (bar-end shifters rule!!). It was on sale at The Cranks (North Syd).
Everything seems to fit the bill (very strong road frame + great gearing) but I don't know anything about those rims/wheels - Alexrims DM18 laced to Sora hubs.
Does anyone know anything about those wheels/rims? Will they last? I commute 60km /day so I hit all sorts of [censored] on the roads in Sydney. I need something rather strong.
DM18 rims are quite good - certainly they'll be fine for commuting. I would imagine the Sora hubs would be fine unless you're thrashing them in rain, mud etc...
I use a set of DM18's laced to Deore hubs for trail riding (moderate XC) - and they're great.
I commute on the same thing. Bought it some 6 months ago and clocked some 2,000 km on it. The wheels are actually pretty good. Strong, I mean. I ride in any weather, some rain, some mud and so far I had no problems with it. I have just replaced brake shoes. I bought the bike only for commuting, just to beat the sh..t out of if on Sydney roads. The "LE" model is a great buy and I also love the bar-con shifters. It is no racer though, it is way too heavy for sprints. But for commuting, this just did the trick for me. You can actually fit fenders/mudguards on it and still have enough space for some fatty tyres. I ride 32's and I think I could fit even 38's.
