Looking for a "road racing" bicycle with 3 front sprockets (or chainrings I think they called) and costing about £550. Gear controls MUST be on the handlebars or integrated into the brake levers such as on the claud butler san remo. I have riden a bike that has gear levers on the down tube and I hated it. I would like to join cycle races occasionaly but how competetive can a £550 bike be??? Any other advice you can give to someone getting back into cycling??

That's now 1100$US....so that could buy a decent bike. Especially if you have a decent internet 'used road bikes' site there. My brother-in-law found incredible bargains on excellent road bikes for sale in Denmark. found on the web of course. Someone's always looking to sell the 'old' bike to get a new one.
So you might find a treasurebut back to your question.....it should be ''how competitive are your legs and lungs, nevermind how much your bike cost you''

I have to agree with Eilert on this. The engine is what makes the difference as to whether or not you would be competitive. However, it is much more fun getting the engine in shape on a nice bike than on any old piece of junk!😄

Funny about the engine talk. I ride an OPUS Andante which is a Canadian made bike and not a lot of them around but getting more popular in my parts. I'm riding with a group when 3 of us decide to break from the others for a mid ride sprint. When we slow back down one of the younger guys said man that bike accelerates, where can I buy one, then an older guy says forget the bike can I buy your engines. I found it very complimentary. To the main topic though shop around and make sure you buy a bike that fits.
