When I replaced my old 8 speed gears to 9 speed I had to get a new 9 speed chain as well. Now I have found a need to use back the old 8 speed gears again. The question I am asking is can I use the 9 speed chain on the old 8 speed gears? Will it works properly? Anyone with any experience?

Thus, you can use a "9-speed" chain with a 7-speed or 8-speed system, or a "10-speed" chain with a 9-speed system. Since the chains designated for more gears are usually more expensive and don't last as long, this is not the ideal approach, but it's perfectly workable."

_ The key thing to remember is that the outside is narrower, but the inner dimension (3/32) is the same among all speeds. 9 spd chain works just fine on 8 or 7 speed cogs.
