Its not possible to shift to largest chainring. the '96 LX shifter 8spd just doesn't seem to want to
"catch". I can shift from small to middle and back. I've taken it apart and have noticed a piece of
metal preventing the claw from entering the ratchet. this piece doesn't seem to look out of place or
loose though....anyone else have experiences with this?

A top shifter is only $9.95 with a cable.
A top shifter de-shimano-izes half your gear train, too! You'll get the more-responsive Ergo-like
benefits of genuine friction shifting!Or another Shimano shifter. Or a G/S shifter.
