Could I index shift a 7sp XT rear der, and cassette, using Ultegra 8sp barends?
My vague recollection is that the spacing is the same.

It is nearly the same, but off by 0.1 mm per cog. You could probably put in 8sp
spacers and then it would be perfect. I believe the built-in-spacer small cogs
are identical between 7 & 8sp, but I'm not absolutely sure. Anyway, there is
only two of them so an accumulated error is not important, plus the outer cog
(small) is controlled more by the r-der H-stop when it comes to indexing.
