I have a bike with Alivio components and an 8-speed rear cassette which
needs some components replacing. The Deore derailleur fits straight
on, works well, and seems to be a worthwhile upgrade from the Alivio.
But the Deore shifters are 9-speed. Will these work OK with the
8-speed rear, or are the steps on the 9-speed closer together? If
Deore is not compatible, what would be the best 8-speed substitute?
I'm looking for better quality than the Alivio components, which were
showing signs of wear after only 18 months.

Alivio's steel chainrings last longer than alloy rings.Anyway, if you like, you could upgrade to 9-speed by fitting 9-speed
shifters, cassette and chain. (Shimano 9sp cassettes fit on Shimano 8sp
hubs; existing derailleurs should work).~PB
