I have a HED disc wheel with a 7-speed cassette hub. I would like to convert the bike to 9-speed, so that I can use my 9- speed wheels for training, and warming up on a trainer. Is it possible to exchange the 7-speed freehub for a 9-speed one? Or do I need to suck it up and get a new disc?
Also, on the same bike, I have a problem with the (threaded) headset loosening. Anytime that I go for a ride longer than 15- 20 miles, I get back, and can freely wiggle the fork around. Often I tighten the thing up by hand while riding, but this seems like a less than ideal workaround. I tried wrapping plumber's tape around the top threads of the fork, but this only slows the loosening, it doesn't stop it.
You should be able to fit 8 of 9 cogs on the cassette body and use it that way. But your 7-speed disk is likely to be 126mm OLN, whereas your 9-speed wheels will be 130mm OLN.
