I was converting my MTB to a single speed for the winter, and decided to take the shift units off of my old 8 speed XT RF SL units (rather than buying new brake levers). In so doing, a question popped into my head. If I were of a mind to switch to 9 speed, could I pick up a pair of cheapo 9 speed LX shifters, say, like these (http://preview.tinyurl.com/uynf3), unscrew them from their brackets, and screw them into the bottom of my RF SL units (74x, V-brake compatible, using 3 screws to secure the mechanism to the brake lever/bracket instead of the older 737 style single allen bolt)?
