I've volunteered 4 years running at the SF GP and TmI and for the most
part have done my job as a course marshall and pretty much been shut out
of swag and meeting any of the riders. This year finally things turned
around a bit.
First, I was stationed at Union and Columbus, which was absolutely nuts
with spectators. Worst of all were these suicidal little old chinese
ladies who wait until a motorcycle, car or riders are baring down upon
them to dart out across the road. I swear the cops in that town earned
their salary. I saw this [censored] happen at least a dozen times. "Get out
of the road" must translate to "please cross now, and have a nice day"
in chinese or their testing Darwin's theories.
Anyway, as the race went on, the crowds got thicker and it was all I
could to to keep people back as the riders and vehicles rocketed down
Union and turned right onto Columbus. I'm still a bit stiff from
standing all day, but it was probably the best vantage point I've worked
yet. I've got scads of pics to sort through but here's a post race one
I think makes me at least Prince of Freds, at least for a day. They
both signed my shirt and Andrea even told me how cool my bike was. :-)
