If they do it as a relay, i.e. one rider riding at a time, then it's possible but difficult. If they're all pedaling at the same time, it's nearly impossible. The record average speed for RAAM (Race Across America) is 15.4mph for a single rider. The guys you mention claim they have to average 18 miles per hour. Either they are pedaling less than 4000 miles, or their taking more than 8 days because pedaling 4000 miles over 8 days (192 hours) requires an average of 20.83 mph.
