  1. Hi,

This is a bit of a general question. Having recently starting buying Cycling
Weekly for the Tour de France coverage, I've been reading the rest of the
    magazine too.

In this weeks copy is the write up of the National 24h championship held in
the Shropshire area. The winner clocked up 480 miles in 24 hrs. And Gethin
Butler has done 497 miles in the past.

Question is, how does anyone get that fit, that driven, that motivated? That
is just completely incredibly. That's an avg. of at least 20 mph all day
    long!

I'm not unfit, and can just about scrape doing 27 miles at an avg. of about
18/19 mph, on an old tourer laden down with panniers, but I cannot conceive
of moving to a level which would allow me to move up to doing 20plus mph for
    countless hours on end.

I'm guessing these guys who compete are amateurs, are they? Everything is
relative - I work full time and have 3 little kids, so have not much time to
cycle, but even if I spent hours on end training, I couldn't possible
    compete...

It's just amazing. Wow! I'm off to bed now anyway.

Better still are the off-road 24hour riders IMO.The Salomon/old Red Bull
solo winner did 17 laps. The team of 4 who won the main event did 25
laps. And that was through some of the worst mud seen in an endurance event
    - it was so bad that many teams pulled out in less than 12 hours as it was
so demoralising going through 3 inch of sticky mud.

They are just different to normal people.I couldnt even stay awake for 24
hours - these dont get off their bike for more than 15 minutes in that
time.Andy Wilkinson has done Lands End to John O'Groats a number of times
    - that is over 48 hours non-stop(I think they do stop a couple of times
    for a hour).

Andy Wilkinson has the records for both 12 and 24 hours with 300 and
    525 miles.

He can currently be seen on BBC3 in a repeat of the "Hercules"
    endurance contest.

    Regards!

    He also has the outright End-to-End record - 41:04:22 in a fully-faired
Windcheetah, and was half of the crew who hold the mixed tandem record over
the same... Not to mention lapping the Mountain Circuit in the faired
Speedy five minutes quicker than some bloke called Boardman.

He once turned up to a BHPC 50 km hilly time trial and passed me at the top
of the bank heading down into West Auckland. I maxed out at 56 mph while
watching him vanish into the distance. He won by nine minutes...

Well for a start, you have to like riding your bike a lot. And then that's
just what you do - ride it. A lot. Gethin also rides Audax events which
are non-competitive so it's not just about being the fastest.

Yes. They'll spend a big chunk of their free time riding. Most would ride
to and from work as well.
