Luxembourg's Frank Schleck has won the Tour of Switzerland ahead of American Lance Armstrong after the ninth and final stage, a 26.9km time-trial won by Germany's Tony Martin. Schleck finished 12 seconds ahead of seven-time Tour de France winner Armstrong of RadioShack in the overall standings, with Saxo Bank team-mate Jacob Fuglsang third at 17 seconds.

Armstrong has narrow Swiss miss
Lance Armstrong 's bid to win the Tour of Switzerland came up just short Sunday, with the Texan finishing second by 12 seconds to Frank Schleck of Luxembourg.
The seven-time Tour de France was seventh overall going into the stage, but surged into contention by placing 11th in the 16.6-mile time trial around Liestal, finishing in 33 minutes, 30 seconds to trail stage winner Tony Martin of Germany by 1:09.
Olympic time trial champion Fabian Cancellara finished second in the stage, 17 seconds back, while Salt Lake City's David Zabriskie clocked the third best time, 29 seconds behind Martin.1

Swiss finish gives Armstrong boost heading into Tour
A cautious first-stage time-trial descent on rain-slick roads a week ago likely cost Lance Armstrong the first stage-race victory of his cycling comeback, but the 38-year-old Texan still showed in the Tour of Switzerland that he must be taken seriously in the upcoming Tour de France, which starts July 3 in Rotterdam.
Armstrong finished second in the nine-day Swiss race only 12 seconds behind SaxoBank's Fränk Schleck, whom he beat by five seconds in Sunday's closing time trial. Rui Costa set the decisive attack out of a seven-man front group with around ten kilometers remaining in the eighth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Portuguese rider won with a dozen seconds over teammate José Joaquín Rojas and Maxime Monfort (HTC). Robert Gesink fought of all attacks in the undulating terrain and kept his 29-second in the overall classification.

Tour de Suisse marred by worries over Kirchen, in coma
Luxembourg racer Kim Kirchen, 31, complained of dizziness and feeling very unwell Friday night during dinner with his Tour de Suisse Katusha team, and he was taken immediately to hospital, where he has been in an induced coma since. The coma was induced to better evaluate his medical condition. He reportedly suffered a mild heart attack, similar to a problem he had in 2009, but according to a Katusha news release Saturday 19 June “it is possible to exclude both an infarctus or a thrombosis.” He was 48th in the rankings in the race before Friday.

Kirchen suffered heart attack Friday
Luxembourg cyclist Kim Kirchen was placed in a medically induced coma Saturday after having a heart attack at the Tour of Switzerland, his team said.
The rider felt dizzy at the team hotel on Friday night following the seventh stage of the race and was sent to the Zurich University Clinic.

Visibly more than satisfied with his fifth place in the Tour de Suisse's toughest mountain stage on Thursday, Lance Armstrong refused to rule out victory in the Tour de France come July.

Mark Cavendish's troubled season took another twist today when the Manx sprinter suffered abrasions and bruising after falling heavily at full speed 40 metres from the finish line of stage four in the Tour of Switzerland in the town of Wettingen.

The 26 year old was yesterday named as one of twelve Cervélo Test Team riders in the running for the nine places on the Tour de France squad. Some, such as 2009 points jersey winner Thor Hushovd, fellow stage victory Heinrich Haussler seem almost certain to get the nod, while Xavier Tondo and Carlos Sastre will be amongst the chief hopes in the mountains if they ride the race. Tondo pulled out of the Giro d’Italia close to the end of the race because of illness, while Sastre finished the race in eighth overall despite a herniated disk.
