The bottom bracket on my '06 Trek 5000 is marked with torque figures and things like "drive side BSA" and "04-06" (date?). Does anyone know if I can upgrade to a Shimano Hollowtech II series bottom bracket?

Yes, a Trek 5000 would have a standard English thread bottom bracket shell.
The thing is that you'll need a crank that fits into the Hollowtech II cups. You can't retrofit the external bearings to a crank that uses a 'normal' type bottom bracket.

The cups on the mysterious BSA bottom bracket that came with my bike have the same general look as the Hollowtech II cups. Park's BBT-9 tool for Shimano Hollowtech II bottom brackets fit these BSA cups. So maybe my crank set is Hollowtech II compatible.Anyone know what BSA is? Bontrager Select A______?
