  1. So I stripped off two of the slots on the drive-side lockring, stupidly
not remembering that italian comes off counterclockwise. Hoping that
this will come off at all, my plan is to bring it into an LBS, which
hopefully has a better tool than my 20 year old sugino lockring
remover. If they cannot get enough of a purchase, or the ring is just
stuck on the (alu) bb shell - any suggestions? Could/should I try to
cut it off with a dremel? (I am replacing the BB anyway). Any removal
tips (beyond 'go to lbs' which I'll do) would be appreciated.

Second - I was planning in replacing this splined dura ace bb, which
came on a used bike I bought, with similar. Dura ace has already meant
top of the heap for me. Then I read (here, old thread) that the Dura
Ace bb is not cartridge, is finicky to adjust, and requires more
maintenance due to it's cone/bearing design. (After reading this, I was
not surprised to find that the bb on the used bike had loose bearings
when everything else was mint). Seems like Ultegra would be a much
better fit me (who values reliability and durability more than weight)
and for Seattle winters. Ultegra bb would be compatible, right? Any
reason not to go to Ultegra? (weight is not important).

Thanks for suggestions on removal of old, and purchase of new.

There is a tool with 6 prongs that should help get that fixed cup out.
I once had to file off the burrs I'd raised.

    Ultegra BB-6500 is a good substitute for Dura-Ace BB-7700. Only a
    little heavier.

If really stuck..all the guts out of the BB less cup..saw blade in
there and cut sections of the aluminum cup out, it will eventually fall
    out.

Correct-upgrade to Ultegra. The DA BB, another 'standard' shimano has
since walked away from, was total junque-

  4. Yup, just finally got fed up of trying to set up the DA BB and replaced it
with an Ultegra myself. Much less hassle and just as smooth....

  5. Gregg's Cycle Greenlake/Seattle had no problem removing my damaged BB
cup, and I had them face the shell, which it turns out had never been,
and install the ultegra 6500 as long as they were at it.

    Thanks for the advice.
