My neighbor purchased a LeMond with a 2 ring crank. He had the LBS change the crank to a 3 ring crank. The 105 front derailleur now rubs against the crank arm and creates a squeak that drives me nuts when riding with him. When he moves off of the large crank the squeak goes away and the crank arm does not rub. Should they have changed the derailleur to a 3 crank ring derailleur? Or is there a three ring derailleur or is the same derailleur made to work on both crank types?

I think I figured it out. They should have changed the derailleur to a triple.

there really are two different derailleurs: one for the triple and one for the double cranks. If the guys thought it would work fine they were mistaken. But the sound might come from the derailleur being to low and rubbing against the big chainring. In that case, a small adjustment will solve your problem easily.
