A deficit of 500 calories a day.

Zaskar
Are you saying take 500 calories less per day and this will allow for normal winter training and steady weight reduction?

Yes 500 cals a day deficit is a safe way to ensure weight loss and still have energy to train, no matter what season of training your in.you will shed 1lb per week of fat.

I've been doing 500 cal deficit dieting now for some time(3 months), since I've been forced to shed some weight gained during an infortunate detraining period.
So far it's working perfectly for me, the 1lb/week goes off very steadily and testing show I'm still getting the expected training-adaptions from my restarted trainingschedule.
For me 500 cal works like a charm. I've tried 750 - 1000 cals deficits, didn't last...one week of training while doing this much reduction has me right into bonk-land...never again :p
