1. Hi All.

I am reasonably new to cycling but hold a reasonable level of fitness. Around work I generally get to the gym 3 times a week (4 where possible), each time completing about 40km on a stationary bike and a few weights here and there.

I have decided to take up a challenge, and would like to compelte the London to Brighton 100km challenge at the end of June. Am I realistically going to be able to complete this journey? - What sort of advice can you guys offer?

Also. I have an old Subway Carerra hybrod bike, which is in good codition but not the easiest thing in the world to ride. I was thinking of buying myself a road Bike (such as the Giant Defy 4 or the Trek 1.1) to get out on the roads alittle more often and turn this challenge into a hobby. In the short time i have been cycling I have really enjoyed it and it is something I would be keen to stick with.

Typical weeks physical excersies

Daily commute to work - 4 mile round trip
Tuesday cycle - 40km bike level 6
Thursday cycle - 40km bike level 6
Saturday/Sunday cycle - 40+km level 6

I am wary that this is all gym work, should I be out on the road?

Thanks

Tom

2. Gym cycling is completely different to road biking, you maybe able to do 40km indoors, put wind hills traffic into play it's completely different story, I was in your boat this time last year, bought a carrera TDF heavy bike, with enough training on real roads by increasing your millage every week, take a longer route home if you can. before the journey make sure you do a 100km cycle before hand so you know what to expect, With enough practice you should be able to complete it, Try doing a 20km cycle the add 10km each week, the week before you should do a 100km cycle, try and rest the day before and carbo load the night before.

3. Like speedrom stated, gym cycling is much different. You have to consider the wind, and the terrain. I think you should just practice a little better, and you MIGHT be able to get it done. It would probably be very challenging and exhausting, though. Just build your excersizes up until you think you are ready. Good luck

4. Keep up guys.
