I have just seen the next 100 meter world record holder.
I was pleasantly surprised that bbc 2 were actually showing athletics
instead of countless home makeover/couples moving abroad for a 'better
life' shows and saw Asafa Powell run 10.03 easing down 20 meters from
the finish in a semi final at a London Grand Prix. In the other semi
Maurice Green did 9.98 but slowed down only 10 meters from the line.
This set up a mouth watering final in which Powell comfortably held
off Greene to beat him by 0.06 seconds in a time of 9.91.
Powell really did not look like he was putting in any effort and at
the age of 21 can only improve in the next few years and I expect him
to hit the low 9.8s at the Olympics. Sadly for Greene I believe that
his best is behind him although he too will probably reach 9.8 in a
couple of weeks time.
The 100 meters was very mediocre last year with no fast times all
season but with Powell in place to take over from Greene if not this
year then certainly in the next, I see the record being lowered.
Of course all this depends on Powell not getting caught out as a drug
cheat!
