Will some of the cyclists next year sit out the TDF next year to compete in the Olympics. or will they use it as a *prep* for Athens? Or, are the two competitions *apples and oranges* and can't really be compared? I'll be in Athens the last week for the finish of the track & field and other events, so I'll only see cycling on TV as I travel through Central/Eastern Europe before getting to Athens around August 23rd next year.
Also, I suppose that the folks more likely to compete in Athens next year would be the sprinters/time trial specialists?

They're apples and oranges, and can't really be compared...but not in the way that you may think. The simplest way to put it is this: if the scheduling were right (reversed), many riders might include Athens as part of their prep for the TdF.

The Olympics is just a one-day race, kind of like a late classic. I would be mildly surprised if any top rider trained specifically for the Olympics. Most will be in fine form to perform strongly in a single day race. Only if it coincides with the Vuelta a Espana (September) will riders feel a strong urge to skip it.
