Some of the most successful cyclists seem to be those who have a strong background in other sports, such as track and field or rugby, where resistance training is a staple of their off-season conditioning.
But what if we took this a step further, and incorporated strength training directly into our cycling routine, rather than relegating it to the off-season? Would we see improvements in terms of power output, endurance, and overall resilience on the bike?
Its interesting to note that many of the top cycling coaches and trainers are now recommending that their athletes incorporate strength training into their regular routine, often in the form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or other forms of resistance-based exercises.
But how do you effectively integrate resistance training into a cycling routine that already includes a significant amount of cardio-based exercise? Is it a matter of simply adding a few strength training sessions per week, or do you need to fundamentally rethink your entire training approach?
And what about the impact on bike handling and technique? Would incorporating strength training into a cycling routine lead to improved bike handling and technical skills, or would it have a negative impact on these aspects of cycling?
Finally, are there any specific types of resistance training that are more beneficial for cyclists than others? For example, would a focus on functional exercises like squats, lunges, and deadlifts be more beneficial than a focus on isolation exercises like bicep curls and tricep extensions?
