Why do people still believe that shorter cranks are the answer to improving balance in technical sections, when in reality, its the riders inability to adjust their body positioning and weight distribution thats the real issue. It seems like every time a rider struggles with balance, the first thing they do is swap out their cranks for a shorter pair, without even considering the actual root cause of the problem.
Is it not possible that shorter cranks could actually worsen balance in technical sections, by reducing the riders ability to generate power and momentum through the pedals. With shorter cranks, riders may be forced to rely more heavily on their upper body strength to maintain balance, which could lead to fatigue and decreased control.
Furthermore, what about the impact of shorter cranks on the riders center of gravity. By reducing the length of the crank arms, are we not essentially lowering the riders center of gravity, which could potentially make the bike more susceptible to tipping and loss of balance.
It seems to me that the conventional wisdom surrounding shorter cranks and balance is based more on anecdotal evidence and bro-science, rather than actual data and testing. So, Id like to ask, has anyone actually done any real research on this topic, or are we just blindly following the crowd.
