Zone 2 training is constantly touted as the magic bullet for improving performance in cyclocross, but whats the actual science behind it. Is it truly the most effective way to build endurance, or are people just drinking the Kool-Aid because its the popular thing to do.
Many coaches and riders swear by the benefits of Zone 2 training, but how much of that is based on real-world results versus anecdotal evidence. Id love to see some actual data on the topic, rather than just hearing Zone 2 is where its at from every coach and cyclist under the sun.
Take two riders of similar skill and fitness level, with one focusing exclusively on Zone 2 training and the other incorporating a mix of higher-intensity intervals and lower-intensity endurance rides. Whos going to come out on top in a cyclocross race. Is the Zone 2 riders increased endurance going to give them a significant advantage, or will the rider with a more varied training program be able to adapt better to the variable conditions of a cross course.
Lets also consider the fact that cyclocross is a highly technical and explosive sport - do we really think that riding in Zone 2 is going to prepare us for the short, intense bursts of speed required to accelerate out of a turn or up a steep hill. Or are we just using Zone 2 training as an excuse to go easy on ourselves and avoid the hard work of incorporating high-intensity intervals into our training programs.
Im not trying to dismiss the benefits of Zone 2 training entirely, but I think its time we take a step back and examine the real-world benefits, rather than just blindly following the herd. So, lets get some actual data and expert opinions on the table - does Zone 2 training truly hold the key to success in cyclocross racing.
